After passing the ADI Part 2 test, you can apply for a Trainee Driving Instructor licence. This licence allows you to gain experience in teaching individuals to drive, as preparation for the ADI Part 3 test. 

 

How long does a trainee licence last?

Your trainee licence is valid for 6 months. 

 

If you wish to continue on a pink badge, this will need to be renewed at the end of your first 6 month period. 

 

Can I charge for lessons on a trainee licence?

Yes, you can charge for lessons to cover expenses such as insurance and vehicle costs.

 

What are the rules for applying?

Eligibility for a trainee licence includes:

  • passing the ADI part 1 test within the past 2 years
  • passing the ADI part 2 test
  • completing at least 40 hours of training from a qualified ADI, with at least 10 hours conducted in a car, as recorded on the ADI 21T declaration form.
  • be eligible to take the ADI part 3 test

 

How much does it cost?

The application fee is £140, which must be paid using a debit or credit card. The application process takes approximately 30 minutes.

 

To apply, you will require your online user ID and password from the Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA)

 

Where can I find my online user ID and password?

Your user ID, which is different from your ADI personal reference number, can be located on all correspondence from DVSA. If you have never received a user ID or have misplaced it, please email DVSA and provide two of the following pieces of information: 

  • personal reference number
  • driving licence number
  • date of birth

 

How do I accumulate 40 hours of training from a qualified ADI?
